My mother started her cleaning business the way many great American stories begin — out of necessity, determination, and a belief that hard work could build a better life. When our family arrived in the United States as new immigrants, she didn’t have a network, a business plan, or resources. What she did have was grit, pride in doing things the right way, and a deep commitment to providing for her children.
In those early years, we built the business together in the most hands-on way possible. While other kids spent summers at camp, I spent mine helping her grow the business. I used my school supplies to design handmade pamphlets, we printed them at a local office supply store, and then we took public buses from neighborhood to neighborhood posting them door-to-door. It wasn’t glamorous, but it was honest work — the kind that teaches discipline, humility, and the importance of showing up for people.
Built on Discipline, Hard Work, and Service
Those early lessons shaped me long before I fully realized it. When I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 2002, the work ethic I learned from my mother became the foundation that carried me through everything that followed — from the intensity of basic training to my deployment to Iraq in 2003, and ultimately back home safe. The discipline, resilience, and sense of responsibility she instilled in me were the same values the Marine Corps demanded every day.
My mother has been running her woman-owned cleaning business since 1990, and what has always set her apart is her reliability, attention to detail, and genuine care for every home she enters. Her work reflects the best of what people admire in both immigrant families and long-time American small-business owners — pride in craftsmanship, respect for clients, and the belief that every job deserves your full effort.
Growing the Family Business
Even as I became the first in my family to graduate college, continued to graduate school, and built a career in consulting, finance, and fintech, I never stepped away from helping her behind the scenes. Over time, it became clear she needed more than advice — she needed support. She was managing the business while also caring for my brother, who faced mental-health challenges, and no one person should have to carry that alone.
That’s when I made the decision to leave my corporate career and step in fully — not just to manage operations, but to work alongside her. To this day, I personally clean for one of her long-time clients and assist with larger commercial buildings. I believe leadership starts with doing the work yourself, and I would never ask anyone to do something I’m not willing to do.
The Next Generation: SparklePro Cleaning
That commitment is what led to the creation of SparklePro Cleaning — the next generation of our family’s cleaning tradition. SparklePro is not a replacement for Palma’s Maid Cleaning; it is the natural evolution of it. Everything I learned from my mother — her standards, her integrity, and her commitment to treating clients like family — combined with the discipline, leadership, and mission-focused mindset I gained in the Marine Corps, forms the foundation of how we operate today.
Today, SparklePro focuses on expanding commercial cleaning services, strengthening operations, and bringing modern systems, professionalism, and scalability to a business built from the ground up. But at its core, the mission remains the same: work hard, take pride in what you do, and always leave every space better than you found it.
